  1. I dont get the George Ford hate either, yes he missed a couple of kicke, but your attack does not fizz, if your 10 is playing poorly. Do I think Smith should be starting 10? Yes, but I am a Quinns fan
Manu Tuilagi on the bench makes sense, experience, he can play wing, he has done that before for England, also Daily or Freeman can switch to fullback ( even Slade at a push) not forgetting Smith, so every back position is covered, also Manu adds real power to that midfield, which is needed against France.
I understand the Frustration with Daly, he is either on fire or invisible, but does offer, experience, power, still relatively quick, a boot and a half, he is a superb footballer, but like I said he is very hit and miss

  2. I'll explain it re George Ford. He is northern, RL background and he's not Harlequin fanboy's favourite. The sooner the RFU relocate the better. We've been dragged down by the prejudices of the ignorant Barbour crew for too long.

  3. Gave the video a thumbs up since you asked so nicely, Tim.

Re: Elliot Daly, I think it’s a good choice and the right decision. Injuries can’t be helped, and as much of a game-breaker as IF-W proved himself to be last week (the shirt is his after only one game), Daly’s versatility and experience could be crucial. He’s a weak point in terms of his tackling, but if England can create space, then he’ll be dangerous and that boot of his will keep France honest in England’s half even though I’ve never yet seen him make a long-range effort for England.

Likewise, starting with Ford — an absolutely brilliant player in all the boring aspects of flyhalf play — is a good decision. His experience and tactical kicking will, you have sort of got to think, be absolutely critical in the opening quarter of the game. I have a feeling France is going to be right on it from the off and it will be all England can do to keep it tight and tactical, build a lead from the tee if possible, and generally just keep things as close as possible before bringing on Marcus Smith. Speaking of Smith, now’s the time he should be getting as much game time as possible, especially with the NZ tour upcoming, but given how one might reasonably expect the game to go, starting the safer pair of hands makes a certain amount of sense.

Either way, this game will be won and lost up front, so I’m a little surprised it isn’t Marler starting given he’s a stronger scrummager than Genge, but with Cole on the other side of the England scrum, perhaps Borthwick wants to have some forward dynamism in the loose just in case England gets the chance to run with the ball a bit. The whole selection, to my mind, appears to be about balance, with the only question mark being Manu Tuilagi’s selection given what you’ve already pointed out about the cover at 13; he can do a job at 12, too, though, so this might be more than just a loyalty pick: having two bruisers like Tuilagi and Lawrence running into the gaps created late in the game by Marcus Smith is enough to whet the appetite.

These selections are probably the best that Borthwick can make at this stage of his England team’s development, and it likely still won’t be enough, but if they can put in a performance that asks France some serious questions, then that’s something to build from going into the tour and the next season.

Only positives for England insofar as I can tell. Exciting times.

  4. Possible that Tuilagi is selected as another option to charge down whatever channel Ramos is randomly "defending" at any point. Better to risk losing a wing (which Tuilagi has played for England) than risk losing the power option in the centre to attack the French midfield. In which case, it is a "which option do we need to win" selection, rather than a defensive one. Just a thought.

  5. Technically they do hand out caps
Last game for this squad as it is
Should be a massive weekend the Autumn should be possibly (?) better

And to reiterate what others have said your enthusiasm during the tournament has been superb

Are you going to talk to the Uni and do a vlog with your uni team next season? A la Full contact but focusing on your team?

  6. Great point Tim regards Manu decision. Would be great to hear Borthwicks thinking on that . Experience maybe a factor though as Ireland found last week with Murray and their skipper it’s not always a guarantee. Disagree with Tim though on Daly . On the bench I’m okay with , but not for me starting .

  7. My particular favourite against the french was 2017 WC semi. Jonnys kicking beautiful. Though I remember skinners tackle and jumping out my seat with excitement watching at home. My mum telling me to calm down after scaring the cat. Be great to see George Martin producing a few skinner moments . 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

  8. Borthwick definitely has a “bin juice” section in his squad. Would love to know how the likes of Roebuck, Muir, Pearson & Ben Curry feel about their realistic chances of ever getting capped this tournament. There’s some players Borthwick could have picked that are better imo like Murley, Mercer, Barbeary, Radwan, Sleightholme. I have a funny feeling Borthwick went for guys that would just be happy to be in the camp and not get a bit annoyed if they’re not picked (hence “bin juice”)

  9. Can’t believe your thoughts about Daly. Yes he has plenty of England caps and Lions caps too, but that’s history. During this six nations he’s done very little. He’s isn’t even close to being the best wing in the squad. You say it’s a tough game to put a rookie like Muir or Roebuck into? So what? France have done that, everyone have done that at some point. IFW was a rookie against Ireland and was sensational. Daly was a great player but he really isn’t now. I would still select him for this game, but on the bench to cover O/C, wing and fullback.

  10. I know the comments help with engagement and algo's (I liked and subscribed as well!) so I'll throw this into the ring. Daly is not, and never has been a 'bad' player – he's been fantastic for England but I think he's past his best, and in a game where our defence is going to have to be solid, he's not the right man for the job. Bench for cover/long range kicks? Maybe. But I'd rather see Steward in there because he can catch, tackle and work on his attacking game. I'm not 'hating' on Daly, he's just not adapted well to the new rush defence and would rather have seen some new blood or someone solid in defence, if not in attack on the wing – like last week. I read the comments that were put on last weeks vid about not 'hating' on our own players, this is not ad hominum, it's concern for the team. I will HAPPILY eat crow with an entire family size humble pie on Sunday/Monday if he proves me wrong, and I hope he does. I'd rather have indigestion and England win than claim bragging rights for being a broken clock. Come on England!!!
